What This County Finder Does

This county finder answers one question: what county is this place in? Give it your current position, an address, a postcode or a point on the map, and it shows the county with its boundary on the map. It also gives the state or province, the country, the town or city and the postcode, so you have every part of the address in one place.

County, District or Département: It Works in Every Country

Most county lookups only cover the USA. This one covers the whole world. Every country has a level of local government that works like a county, but the name changes: a district in India and Pakistan, a département in France, a Landkreis in Germany, a provincia in Italy, a município in Brazil. The tool knows the right level for each country and prints its name above the answer.

There is no account and no payment. Your position is only used for your own lookup and Maplity does not store it. A share link holds only the coordinates of the point.

Find the County of an Address, ZIP Code or Postcode

Type a street address, a town, a ZIP code or postcode, a landmark or coordinates such as 40.7580, -73.9855 in the box and press Find county. For a short code, add the country (“10001 USA”). The Try buttons load famous places in five countries.

Find Your County by GPS or on the Map

Me uses the location of your phone or computer and answers “what county am I in right now”. You can also click anywhere on the map, or drag the pin, to look up another point. Satellite shows the buildings and fields, which helps near a county line.

Reading the Result

The blue box names the county and the line under it gives the county, the state and the country. The six cards show the county-level area (with its name in that country), the state or province, the country, the city or town, the postcode and the coordinates. The full address of the point is under the cards. When the outline is not available, a note says that the name comes from the address.

Sharing the Result

Share on WhatsApp sends the county, state, country, postcode and a link. Copy result copies the same text, Copy share link copies a link that opens the same point, and Open in Google Maps shows the place there.

1. From the Point to Its Address

First the tool turns the point into an address (reverse geocoding): the country, the state or province, the town and the postcode. This also tells the tool which country the point is in, and so which level is the county there.

2. The County Boundary

Then it asks for the administrative boundary that holds the point at the county level of that country. The boundaries are the official ones, mapped in OpenStreetMap. The outline gives the name of the county and is drawn on the map, simplified to about 50 metres so it loads fast.

3. The Right Level in Each Country

In most countries the county level is the sixth level of the OpenStreetMap boundary system. In India, Bangladesh and Kenya the district or county is one level higher, and in Brazil, Japan and the Netherlands the municipality is the unit that works like a county. The tool uses the right level for each country, and its name, from the table below.

4. Accuracy Near County Lines

The answer is as exact as the point. A street address or a click on the map is exact; a ZIP code or postcode gives the centre of the postal area, and a phone indoors may be 50 to 100 metres off. Near a county line, check the pin on the satellite map and drag it if needed.

1. Voting and elections

Elections are run by the county in many countries. Find your county to see where to register, which ballot you get and where your polling place and election office are.

2. Property tax and sales tax

Property tax and part of the sales tax are set by the county in the USA. Find the county of an address before you look up its tax rate or pay a tax bill.

3. Jury duty, courts and records

Courts, marriage and birth records, wills and land records are kept by the county. Find the county to know which court or records office to contact.

4. Weather and emergency alerts

Storm, flood, fire and tornado warnings are often given by county. Knowing your county tells you which alerts apply to you, even when you travel.

5. Buying, renting or moving home

Schools, taxes, services and building rules can change at the county line. Check the county of a new address before you buy or rent, and update your records after you move.

6. Building permits and planning

Building permits, planning rules and inspections are run by the county or the municipality in many places. Find the right office before you plan work on a house or land.

7. Government forms and ID

Many forms ask for your county or district: passport and ID forms, school forms, Aadhaar and NADRA forms in India and Pakistan, vehicle registration. Get the exact name from the tool.

8. Family history research

County Boundaries: OpenStreetMap

County names and outlines come from the administrative boundaries in OpenStreetMap, read through LocationIQ and Nominatim on Maplity’s own server, which keeps answers for a day so a repeated lookup costs nothing.

Address Search

Addresses and postcodes are found with LocationIQ, OpenCage and Geoapify, with Photon and Nominatim as free fallbacks, all through Maplity’s server.

Maps

The street map is Maplity’s own vector basemap built from OpenStreetMap data, the satellite map is Esri World Imagery, and the map uses Leaflet 1.9. The page runs on Next.js and React.
